Enrolled in the University of California, Davis, August 1941 Completed one semester in residence and withdrew to enlist.

Inducted into Army of the United States, 30 December 1942; as Private and entered on active service 6 January 1943

Active Service Assignments

Jan 1943 to Mar 1943; assigned to the 62nd Training Battalion, Camp Robinson, Arkansas.
Mar to Aug 1943; assigned to 335th Infantry Regiment, Fort Meade, Maryland.
Advanced to Private First Class, 1 July 1943.
Aug to Oct 1943; assigned to The Parachute School, Fort Benning, Georgia.
Oct 1943 to Jun 1944; assigned to 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment 82nd Air Bourne Division, Camp Mackall, North Carolina. This Regiment was sent overseas to the European Theater of Operations, where his Company, 'Jump 2-H ', participated in the invasion of Normandy.

In Service 1 year, 5 months and 15 days.

Private First Class Bitterman was killed in action 14 June 1944 near Normandy, France.
