* The following is abstracted from a letter to Lt. Allen's father from Capt. Bernard V. Deutchman, Personnel Officer, 315th Infantry, 7th Army Hdqts.'… On the 15th of November, 1944, Co M ... was delivering supporting fire for friendly line companies engaging the enemy. His mortar section was located in a small grove near the German lines. The act was difficult due to ... extremely cold weather and the enemy was concentrating fire on the position held by Lt. Allen. While he was well forward observing the fire of his platoon, he was struck and instantly killed by an exploding mortar shell. His valiant service and sacrifice shall not go unforgotten by those who served with him'.
